Famagusta

Little is known on the founding of the city of Famagusta. From the 3rd century to 1200 there is a gap in historical evidence concerning the foundation of the city of Famagusta. Furthermore, there is no material of Byzantine Famagusta.

Our knowledge and written sources date from the end of the 12th century during the period of the third crusade, when the island was under the rule of Isaac Comnenus. Chronographers of the time, inform us that the King of England, Richard the Lionheart that had sailed into Limassol because of a storm out at sea, continued his voyage from Limassol until Famagusta where he docked and marched in land to confront Isaac at Tremithounta. This historic confrontation culminated in Cyprus’ transfer to Richard the Lionheart and then to the Frankish rulers of the Lusignan dynasty.
