Message from the Mayor

Dear fellow citizens and friends of Famagusta

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the website of the Famagusta Municipality

This website will help older people remember their first youth on the beautiful beaches, in ancient Salamis and in the G.S.E. stadium, while younger ones will learn about the once thriving city of the Mediterranean of all eras.

Our city has been correctly described as a “ghost city” and has remained silent and in ruins since the black August of 1974 and its occupation by Turkish invaders. It is a dead city, with its houses in ruins, its hotels in terrible condition, a jungle, a city of winds which is going back to the elements of nature. The once “reigning” city of beautiful Famagusta, the once thriving and developed city of Cyprus, is today in a terrible condition. Today this city is nothing but a continuous war crime in a period of peace. A big part of our city is fenced off by the Turkish troops.

We want this silence to rouse everybody to action and awaken the conscience of people. Despite the passage of 36 years, we the citizens of occupied Famagusta yearn and struggle to return to our city and to vindicate Cyprus. Famagusta – the reigning city in our hearts and our deeds- is the symbol of this struggle. UN Security Council Resolution 550 (1984) is the resolution which condemns the presence of Turkish troops in Cyprus and calls upon Turkey to transfer Famagusta to the administration of the United Nations. The return of Famagusta to the United Nations as a buffer zone for the resettlement of its inhabitants is also urged in Security Council Resolution 789 (1992). At the same time the return of Famagusta, which is the biggest refugee city in Europe, is an obligation undertaken by Turkey on the basis of the second High Level Agreement between Kyprianou and Denktash and also an obligation on the basis of the recent resolution of the European Parliament approved on10 February 2010. Unfortunately Turkey, instead of being held accountable for the violation of these resolutions, is currently a member of the Security Council of the United Nations and this very moment she is presiding over the Council of Europe.

Our message to our city, the “reigning” but silent Famagusta, is that we shall never forget it and that we shall always give it a voice, so that it will become once again the city of our life and the city for our children’s life.

The question of the return of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants will be also a strategic move that will facilitate the promotion of a solution to the Cyprus problem and the reunification of Cyprus, through the messages it will convey and the symbolism it will have.

Citizens are those who are the final judges of all our actions. We are accountable to the citizens, who in the end will pass a judgment on all our work and days. At the same time every citizen of Famagusta and each and every one of us who believes in justice and freedom shall stand as a severe critic of his own conduct and his duty towards a city which is alive and is waiting for us.

It is in this spirit that I welcome you to the official website of the Famagusta Municipality, so as to keep you informed and at the same time be informed by you, with a view to building together a bridge of communication and two-way information.

With this website we are also looking forward to communicating with our oversees fellow citizens, who are in the four corners of the globe, as well as with any researchers and students of the historical truth about Famagusta and for this reason the site is also in English and later on will be also in other languages.

I wish that your journey to the neighbourhoods of our city will be beautiful, useful and productive, bringing nostalgia and action. We will move forward together, we will walk together.

Alexis Galanos
Mayor of Famagusta
